Today we went to our first Colorado State Park. Roxborough Park is about five miles north of Denver in Douglas County. We hiked up Carpenter Peak which tops off at 7,100 ft. We couldn't figure out if it was 6.2 miles one way, or round trip. But from bottom to top and back down again it took right around 4 hours. Along our way we saw a handful deer and a couple of young red foxes. At the very end of the trip we were able to walk right up to a young deer that was eating from a tree just two to three feet away from the trail. There were warnings for black bears, mountain lions and bobcats, but unfortunately Rachel did not get the opportunity to try out any of her survival tactics. (After drinking 32 oz of water, she ended up marking the territory, which probably had something to do with the lack of wildlife we saw from that point on.)
All in all, it was a wonderful first experience. Two important items that were left home on this trip will definitely be remembered next time: a camera and sunblock. The website for Colorado State Parks includes pictures of Roxborough as well as other pictures of other state parks.
I am not sure what park we will visit next, but we will definitely post the details online!
